Therapeutic Options for Gallstone Disease

Abstract
|
|
|
The treatment of gallstones had undergone dramatic changes in the past 5 years. Until recently cholecystectomy was only accepted and effective the therapy for cholelithiasis.
The cost and disability associated with open surgical cholecystectomy as well as technologic developments and a better understanding of the biochemistry of gallstone dissolution have had to the introduction of new treatment options. These
techniques
include dissolution with oral bile acid, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy(ESWL), percutaneous dissolution or ablation of gallstones, and finally laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
Auther will rewiew the current status of these newer treatment options for gallstones and define the role these modalities.
